Journey into Valmiki's Ramayana
By Prof. G. Venkataraman
A deluxe, coffee-table version of Valmiki Ramayana presented in two parts, offering not only a narrative of the classic story of Lord Rama in simple and contemporary style but also an unusual analysis of the relevance of Ramayana’s message to today’s world. Part I deals with Ramayana proper, starting with the story of Valmiki the sage cum poet who wrote the original version. Follow then the six parts or Kaandas, taking the reader right up to Pattabhishekam or the coronation of Rama.
Amazing paintings make the book come alive, and the careful layout which blends the pictures with the text help the reader to constantly feel the pulse of the story.
Part II of the book examines in depth why the value system that the Ramayana exemplifies is highly relevant to today’s world. Starting with a brief introduction to the scriptures and value system that prevailed in ancient India, the book takes the reader through an unprecedented mix of topics ranging from Vedantic philosophy and the Big Bang, to how quantum physics, neuro-biology and psychology give strong hints about consciousness. All this for stressing the fact that Creation having emerged from Pure Consciousness [or the Atma], humans must, above all, reflect the Spark of the Divine that is present in everyone without exception. That is the simplest way of ushering in Rama Rajya or what we would call a righteous society.
